September 4, 2025 | NORDMET Council Meeting in Vilnius: How Meteorological Services Are Evolving Across the Nordic-Baltic Region

On August 25–26, the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service hosted the 29th NORDMET Council Meeting, bringing together the heads of meteorological services from the Nordic and Baltic countries.

NORDMET is a regional cooperation network among the meteorological services of the Nordic and Baltic countries, established to strengthen partnerships, and facilitate knowledge, data, and experience sharing. Lithuania has been an active and full member of the network since 2016.

The meeting in Vilnius covers a range of key topics – from climate change monitoring and the improvement of forecasting systems to joint initiatives in international organizations and enhanced regional cooperation. Delegates were also introduced to the operations of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service, including a tour of forecasters’ workstations, the laboratory, and specialized equipment such as the wind simulator used for calibrating meteorological instruments.

Council members are also sharing key developments from their national meteorological institutions. Denmark is expanding its climate research not only in the Arctic but also in Africa, aiming to develop tailored climate services for developing countries. Facing national budget cuts, Finland is considering ending free aviation weather services and increasing commercial activities. Latvia has developed a new mobile weather application with support from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. Meanwhile, Norway has extended its forecast horizon to 21 days and is piloting an innovative educational game to improve public understanding of seasonal forecasts.

These meetings not only strengthen professional ties across countries but also support the Nordic and Baltic region in acting as a unified voice on the international stage – working toward more advanced and coordinated solutions in meteorological services.
